Middle School Science Teacher

Grades 6–8 • South Redford School District • Redford, Michigan

South Redford School District is looking for a skilled middle school science teacher to join our team. If you love designing investigations, making abstract concepts concrete with a good lab or model, and helping young adolescents develop a scientist's mindset, we want to hear from you.

The Role

As a middle school science teacher at South Redford, you will deliver standards-aligned instruction across physical, life, and earth/space sciences in a grades 6–8 classroom and lab setting. You will design hands-on investigations, facilitate the engineering design process, and prepare students for the high school science sequence. You will partner with a collaborative department and have access to district-adopted curriculum, scientific probeware, digital simulations, and ongoing professional learning.

What You'll Do

• Plan and deliver engaging, three-dimensional science instruction aligned to the Michigan Science Standards and NGSS.
• Design and lead hands-on investigations that build students' inquiry, data analysis, modeling, and scientific argumentation skills.
• Facilitate the engineering design process through student-centered problems and iterative solution development.
• Maintain a safe laboratory environment appropriate for middle school science, in compliance with OSHA, MIOSHA, and district safety procedures.
• Anchor instruction in phenomena and driving questions that spark student curiosity and sense-making.
• Use assessment data (m-STEP Science, and classroom formative assessments) to guide instruction and monitor student growth.
• Differentiate instruction for diverse learners, including students with IEPs, 504 Plans, English Learners, and students receiving MTSS interventions.
• Build strong two-way communication with families and collaborate with your department and Professional Learning Community to plan responsive instruction.

What You Bring

Required

• Valid Michigan teaching certificate with an appropriate science endorsement (Integrated Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth/Space Science) or applicable legacy endorsement covering middle school science.
• Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, with substantial coursework in science or a closely related field.
• Strong content knowledge across physical, life, and earth/space sciences appropriate for the middle school level.
• Working knowledge of laboratory safety protocols appropriate for middle school instruction.
• Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills with young adolescents.
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with students, families, and colleagues.
• Commitment to equity and high expectations for every learner.

Preferred

• Master's degree in science, science education, curriculum and instruction, or a related field.
• Integrated Science endorsement or multiple secondary science endorsements.
• Experience with three-dimensional science instruction, phenomenon-based learning, and the engineering design process.
• Experience with scientific probeware (Vernier, PASCO) and digital science simulations (PhET, Gizmos, or equivalent).
• Experience with PBIS, MTSS, or other positive behavioral frameworks.
